Facet

Facets are the flat surfaces on a gemstone that are cut and polished to enhance the stone’s ability to reflect light. The arrangement and number of facets directly impact a diamond’s brilliance and sparkle. For example, round-cut diamonds typically have 57 or 58 facets, each reflecting light and contributing to the gem's overall beauty.

Filigree

Filigree is a delicate jewelry design technique that involves intricate metalwork, often in gold or silver, to create lace-like patterns. These designs can include swirls, twists, and floral shapes, adding an ornate, romantic feel to rings and other jewelry pieces. Filigree is commonly associated with vintage and antique styles, offering a timeless look that showcases detailed craftsmanship.

Fire (in diamonds)

Fire refers to the colorful flashes of light that are dispersed when light passes through a diamond. These rainbow-like reflections are a result of the diamond’s ability to break light into its spectral colors. The quality of a diamond’s fire is influenced by its cut, with well-cut diamonds exhibiting more vibrant flashes of color. Fire is one of the key factors that add to a diamond’s overall brilliance.

Fluorescence (in diamonds)

Fluorescence in diamonds refers to the light emitted by the stone when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Some diamonds glow blue, yellow, or other colors under UV light due to the presence of certain minerals. While fluorescence can affect a diamond’s appearance in certain lighting conditions, it is usually not noticeable under normal lighting. Fluorescence is graded from None to Very Strong on diamond certificates.

Flush Setting

A flush setting, also known as a gypsy setting, involves embedding the gemstone into the surface of the ring, so it sits level with the metal band. This setting provides a sleek and smooth appearance, with no prongs or edges protruding, making it ideal for active wearers. Flush settings are often used in men’s rings or for designs where durability and simplicity are key.
